Hi! My name is Tom, and this is my second blog. A slightly more focused, but no less creative affair, I hope!
On this page I'm looking to explore a bit of human biology - some basic principles, some slightly more advanced - with a handful of the other sciences mashed in to help the whole thing run slightly more smoothly. I'll be starting - soon - from the ground up, talking a little about cells and their workings, providing a firm foundation for not only my own train of thought, but also for anyone who is interested in finding out a bit more about themselves (physically speaking!).
However, I'll begin with a small introduction. I'm 21, and have lived most of my life in the beautiful city of Edinburgh, Scotland. I currently study Medicine at the university here, love it, and hope to pursue some form of career in cardiology later on. Last year I graduated from the same university with Physiology, so I like to think I have at least some grounding for this little project. My dissertation involved studying the roles of various types of inflammatory cells in the progression of atherosclerosis (a disease you may have heard referred to as 'fatty arteries'). My interests currently lie in the fields of heart and vascular disease; scientific writing; and the public understanding of science.
To be honest, this blog will be just as helpful to me as it will be for any readers I might glean, as I find the acts of explaining and verbal reasoning to be very conducive to any form of learning. I'll consult a few of my friends and have a listen to what they might want to read about, and hopefully act on those suggestions in the future. But for now, you'll just have to watch this space! Second post incoming...
